Located in Southern Wood County, 246 miles from Chicago, 158 miles from Milwaukee, and 178 miles from Minneapolis, the Wisconsin Rapids Area is made up of Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point, Port Edwards, Nekoosa, and Rudolph.
Wisconsin Rapids itself is located in the middle of the state along the banks of the hardest working river in the country, the Wisconsin River.
Wisconsin Rapids
From a historical viewpoint, the Wisconsin Rapids area is unique in that it is located within the glacial driftless area; its landscape is untouched by the glaciers which reached a point only a few miles North of the city. The Southern tip of the glacial ice flow (marked by a ridge of glacial debris) is known as the Marshfield Terminal Moraine.
Various Native American indian tribes fought for this flat land, abundant fresh water, forests for hunting, and good crop land. Accordingly, Wood County was at one time inhabited by the Chippewa, Menomonie, Winnebago, and Potawattomi indian tribes.
