A Growing Cranberry Bed

A Growing Cranberry Bed

Commercial cranberry farms began appearing in Wisconsin around 1860. Today, there are about 150 cranberry marshes in the state; these marshes total nearly 110,000 acres and are found throughout 18 counties. Unlike traditional crops, cranberries are not planted each year. Rather, the vines grow year round and bear fruit every fall.

Some of the vines producing fruit today are direct descendents of those planted over 100 years ago. Although there are over 100 different types of cranberries, a few varieties account for most of the fruit grown in Wisconsin- Searles, McFarlin, Howes, Stevens, and Ben Lear.
